Maths - Perimeters

How to use:

Groups of students were separated into roles:

  • a person who measured (who operated the metre stick wheel),
  • an observer (who counted how many clicks the wheel took)
  • a recorder (who wrote the measurements down).

Each group measured four sides of the covered area/oval at school, then added up the total of sides to determine the perimeter of the covered area.

Grade 2/3 Mixed Class - Small Group Activity

Created: August 2010

Designed by C. Spratt, Developed by Stephanie Flynn

Purpose: Students will gain an understanding of

  • perimeters
  • estimation
  • addition.

Critical Reflection:

Groups worked well and enjoyed their roles.

Problem solving was high as often groups counted different amounts down each side of the covered area/oval so the 'experiment' was undertaken again to check.

Students had lengthy discussions about the accuracy of the measuring stick used and when 'clicks' should be counted.

Time was a slight factor here - in all the activity took around 30 minutes but could easily have taken longer.

Some students needed to be brought back on task as being 'outside' proved a distraction but most were on task throughout.
