Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Grade 2/3 Mixed Class

Whole Class Activity

Created: August 2010

Developed and Designed by Stephanie Flynn

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this lesson students should have an understanding of:
  • purpose of a rule
  • the concept of a rule
  • how we use rules in the classroom, at home and in sports
  • why rules are made
  • how rules are implemented and enforced
  • why we need rules

Modifications made: Handout added examples at the top.

Critical reflection:

Brainstorming session does not require more than 10-15 minutes as students have a limited knowledge about rules.

Visual aids were used (such as pictures of stop sign, traffic lights, home, school, church, police) to spark discussion during the brainstorming session. Pictures should be in colour to assist students with special needs in the class.

Students with English as a Second Language (ESL) and special needs students will require additional questions and re-phrasing to ensure they understand the concepts being taught.
