Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) Grade 2/3 Mixed Class

Whole Class Activity

Created: August 2010

Developed and Designed by Stephanie Flynn

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept, context and definition of a ‘rule’
  • Understand the concept, context and definition of a ‘law’
  • Understand there are differences between rules and laws.

Critical Reflection:

This lesson is an overview of lesson 1 on Rules and Laws.

Use the brainstroming session as an OHT to prompt discussion. Go through the worksheet from last lesson and add any more thoughts to the OHT.

The purpose of this lesson needs to be clear - to recap on what we have learnt from the last lesson on rules:

  • what is a rule
  • how are rules used
  • examples of rules

then move on to 'laws'.

Students need to write in their own words their own definition of a rule and a law.

This lesson is a lead in to slightly more in-depth discussion through other subjects (Maths, ICT, English) more conceptual issues around laws and rules.
