SOSE: Rules and Laws Part 4

Download Lesson Plan

Time: 30 minutes

Strategies used:

  • Overview of class rules.
  • Visual aids (posters) to assist in reminder of rules
  • Brainstroming session

Context:

Students already have an understanding of the role of Government, elections/voting and importation/exportation. This unit is integrated part of the SOSE rules and laws unit.

This lesson is part 3 of 4 lessons on rules and laws - at the end of these lesson students should have be able to determine the difference between a rule and a law.

In this lesson a Police Officer visits the class and gives a talk about who enforces the law and why we need laws.

Grade 2/3 Whole Class

 Created: August 2010

Developed and Designed by Stephanie Flynn

 Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept, context and definition of a ‘rule’
  • Understand the concept, context and definition of a ‘law’
  • Understand there are differences between rules and laws.

Critical Reflection:

Brainstorming session worked well to refresh their memory from pervious lesson but probably wasn’t required. One clear lesson concept needs to be selected and then moved forward throughout the lesson (i.e. one student suggested ‘smoking in the home’ and another ‘smoking in the car’ – one each is a rule and a law). Explaining the concept of ‘why’ one is a rule and one is a law is rather difficult so keep examples clear; explain the use of media (radio, newspapers, TV) in helping adults learn ‘new laws’. Allowing students to also draw their responses as well as write them assisted visual students to express their thoughts better.
